Small Closet? 10 Easy Steps to Get Organized
Clean it Out
We stress this pretty often here. That's because clutter is detrimental to any organization project, especially if you're working with a small space. Go through your closet and purge anything you no longer wear/need. Donate to charity, sell some, and toss anything that's damaged by holes or stains. If you're in between seasons, take out last season's clothes and put them into storage. UrBin Storage is a great option if you've run out of space under your bed. They're affordable, and they'll come to you!
Make a list
In order to get organized, you must get organized. Make a list of what you need to change about your closet. Do you need to add or subtract shelves? Do you need to purchase some storage bins or baskets? What tools will you need to get the job done? Do a little research online and check out other people's closet designs to get an idea of what you'll need.
Explore Your Options
Speaking of getting inspired, explore your options before you dive in there. Are you going to DIY this whole thing? You could always hire a professional to be safe. There are also entire shelving units available at places like Ikea that can allow you to skip a lot of extra work.
Strip It
Once you know what you need to do, clear your closet. Take everything out, including any unwanted shelves or rods. You're going to want to start with a blank slate, without any clutter in your way.
Add Shelves
Time to add the shelves! Most closets come stocked with an upper shelf above the hanging rod, but that's rarely enough. Add some shelves along the sides to store sweaters, pants, anything you would rather not hang.
Add Rods
Once again one is not enough. In order to get super organized, add stacked rods to create extra space for hanged items. From there, you can organize by rod: one for blouses or button downs, one for skirts, one for shirts, etc. You could even take it a step further and organize by color!
Make the Most of Your Space
Make sure you use every inch of space in your closet, so you know you're getting the most out of it. Add as many shelves and rods as possible without overloading the space. Invest in baskets and bins so your shelves aren't overflowing with straggling items, and don't forget about unused wall space. Hang a mirror in there, or hooks for hanging accessories or jewelry.
Create a Place For Shoes
Don't just toss your shoes on the floor and call it a day! Get a shoe rack that either sits on the floor or hangs over the door to create extra space and keep those shoes out of the way.
And Accessories
Accessories are often forgotten about and left to overflow all over the place. Purchase some baskets and bins, and handy command hooks for hanging scarves and hats so everything has a proper place.
Consider a Capsule Wardrobe
Capsule wardrobes are a hit right now. It's a minimalist concept where you only own maybe 20-30 pieces of clothing (including shoes.) That might sound terrifying to a dedicated fashion-addict, but the idea is to buy only high quality, timeless clothing that suits your style and needs and sticking to it. That way you won't over-stuff your tiny closet!
